Feryn Ranch Conservatory offers a haven for waterfowl.
Update: I recently visited Feryn Ranch again. I added a couple late summer pictures for perspective.
Summer.
The Feryn Ranch Conservation Area northeast of Spokane offers a glimpse of what the prairie was like before the area was settled by homesteaders in the 1800’s.
C’mon Dad, let’s go.
- Remnants.
Nestled between plowed fields and encroaching housing developments, Feryn Ranch C.A. is a 164 acre preserve that offers a home to over 60 species of birds. It also serves as a safe stopover on migratory routes for over 100 species. Anyone interested in birdwatching, or just a pleasant hike with a panoramic backdrop, should take a morning or afternoon to explore this wetland sanctuary. Dogs are permitted as long as they are kept on a leash. Avalon, my newfy mix, accompanied me recently on a morning jaunt through the area. It was raining on and off, which contributed to our solitary yet memorable experience.

While walking in fields ,
where nature yields
close harmony with what is best,
with ipads, cells ,and such all at rest ,
it warms me like a feathered nest ,
just being alive there , —feeling blessed—-

You can throw in GPS too. I wonder how many visitors use sat-map technology to find this out-of-the-way sanctuary. I wonder how many recognize the irony that the birds they have come to watch have made a journey, often thousands of miles, to the same location with zero technology, only their senses and “inferior” intelligence to guide them.

Few, I’d say, know or care about what the wingers have seen or experienced, or how they got to the very same spot where their ancesters visited .A wild Birding magazine I get tells many tales of the travails involved in getting to viewing sites, detailing sighting statistics , feather and beak shapes, colors, size, etc, and I’ve never once seen comments about the marvel of how the viewees managed it .
